Seven Helpful Tips for the Traveling Breastfeeder

Are you traveling this season? Whether you’re driving three towns over or flying cross country, here are seven tips that are sure to ease your holiday travels!

  • Mamava has an  iPhone app specifically design for traveling mamas. Download it here and use it to help make pumping and nursing on the go easier this year!
  • Breastmilk is now exempt from TSA’s 3-1-1 rule. As long as you declare your breast pump and milk prior to screening you should be able to get through TSA relatively hassle free and with all items intact. Read more on TSA’s legislation regarding breast milk here
  • If you ever choose to mail frozen breast milk over the holidays be sure to follow USPS’s guidelines for shipping items with dry ice. (Keep in mind that if your milk thaws during transportation it should be used within 24 hours.)
  • If you’re staying at a hotel, call ahead to ensure that your room is equipped with a refrigerator for your milk (many hotels provide this), or that you have access to a secure fridge within the hotel. Some hotels like The Hard Rock Hotel in Chicago, provide services specifically for nursing mothers. Check out their Nursing Mother’s Amenity Program here.

  • Additionally it is important to remember these timeframes for pre pumped breast milk, courtesy of the La Leche League: breast milk stays fresh for three to eight days in the refrigerator, for six to 12 months if it’s frozen, and for 4 to 6 hours at room temperature.
  • Recently, studies found that only 8% of national airports are actually breastfeeding friendly, of this 8% here are a few airports that will provide you and your babe with the proper accommodations: San Francisco International Airport, Dallas Love Field Airport, and Burlington International, home of the first Mamava!
